Polynesian & Maori Tattoos UK | Freehand Tribal Experts

At Skinzophrenic Tattoos in Hereford, we specialise in authentic freehand Polynesian and Maori tattooing.

Unlike stencil-based designs, we apply each piece freehand directly onto the skin, allowing the tattoo to flow naturally with the body’s shape and movement.

This approach gives every design a perfectly balanced, organic aesthetic that feels alive.

Our artist Mateusz has received specialised training from Antonio Oliveira, one of the world’s leading experts in Polynesian tattoo art, ensuring authenticity, and the highest artistic standard.

Getting your Traditional Polynesian Tattoo - How It Works

1. Initial Consultation

Your journey starts with a relaxed consultation where we chat about your ideas, design preferences, and the overall style you’re drawn to. We’ll look at the area you’d like tattooed and discuss how the design can best flow with your body’s natural shape and movement.

2. The First Session – Building the Foundation

On the first day, we will draw the structure freehand directly onto your skin, spending around 2–3 hours to map out the main shapes and flow of the piece (for example, a full arm).
Once the design is balanced and you’re happy with the composition, we begin tattooing the bold base lines — usually 4–5 hours of tattooing time.

This first session establishes the core structure and direction for the rest of your piece. Afterward, we’ll allow the area to fully heal for around three weeks before continuing.

3. Subsequent Sessions – Detailing the Artwork

In the following sessions, we refine your piece step by step. The artist continues to draw freehand directly onto the skin, adding intricate details, patterns, and shading. Each session builds upon the last, bringing more depth and symbolism into the design.

How Long Does It Take?

Every client is different, body size, design complexity, and healing time all play a role.
As a general guide:

  • Full Arm: around 5–7 sessions

  • Full Leg: around 7–10 sessions

We always work at your pace, ensuring each stage heals properly and that the design develops naturally and harmoniously with your body.

After the first session, some clients choose to do up to 2 sessions in a row at a time. This allows faster completion and easier healing, but it’s totally up to you.
